Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow

My good friend [personal profile] ride_4ever is a librarian. So she could relate to me here.

I'm so happy to have a library card again, this time from the Lee County Library System. (I moved to Fort Myers, Florida, from Chicago, Illinois.) I'm also happy to have dove into e-books.

We all started reading physical books, and I used to tell myself that those were the only books I wanted to read. (I remember when Ride and I would go to the now defunct Borders book store. We'd find books we wanted to read, and we'd grab something to eat and drink. Then we'd sit at a table reading the books and eating and drinking.)

Well, Borders is gone, and my days of only reading physical books are gone. E-books not only save trees, but they save space in my home.

When I moved from Chicago, I left hundreds of books behind. My home in Fort Myers can only hold a certain number of them. I don't have books stacked up against the wall or in the corners or stored in the basement. (We don't have basements in Fort Myers.) The physical books I brought with me in the move are on bookshelves, and those bookshelves are FULL.

Today, many libraries, including mine, allow you to borrow books by downloading them onto your device. At my library, we can download 20 books at a time, and we have 14 days to read each book. (You can also borrow the same book again, I believe, if you run out of time.) I find that many more popular ones have waiting lists, but that's fine. I get myself on the lists and wait my turn.

Downloading books from the library also saves me money. I read a lot of books. So if I were to buy books, I'd be spending a lot every month.

I don't need to own the books I borrow. I just want to read them. Furthermore, books that I want to own (such as the classics) I own already. And if there's a book in the future that I HAVE to own, I'll buy it—no big deal.

Currently, I'm reading CATCH AND KILL by Ronan Farrow, THE 5 SECOND RULE by Mel Robbins, PARENTS WHO KILL by Carol Anne Davis, and MAKE YOUR BED by Admiral William H. McRaven.

~~

I FINALLY started my fic writing. So far, I've got two chapters of my Book 1 up with many, many, many more chapters and books to come. (I post on either Saturdays or Sundays.) My series is the BLAZE series based on MCU and focuses on Natasha Romanoff. Please check it out, and please leave kudos (if you're inspired) and comments (if you're inspired)! Thanks!
Movie Review: "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" (2017)

Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper (the voice of Rocket), Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Kurt Russell, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone

Director: James Gunn

The superhero movie "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is the 15th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

Continuing from the 2014 "Guardians of the Galaxy," the half-human, half-Celestial Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) along with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), the raccoon-like Rocket (with the voice of Bradley Cooper), and Baby Groot are the Guardians of the Galaxy. Hired to protect valuable batteries for Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), the Sovereign people leader, the Guardian's payment is Nebula (Karen Gillan), Gamora's sister, caught trying to steal the batteries. From there, a series of exciting but unfortunate events have the Guardians fleeing from the Sovereigns. What does Quill learn about his childhood and his heritage; who is Ego; will Nebula ever soften her hatred for Gamora, and are the Sovereigns successful in their pursuit of the Guardians?

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

I was particularly impressed with the acting skills of Elizabeth Debicki. She's an absolute natural.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

What I liked: As with the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," I love the 20th-century music on Quill's cassette. Songs like "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac and "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens are some of my favorites.

What I liked:  Not only did I love the self-absorbed, pompous Ayesha, I loved the look of the gold Sovereigns.

What I liked: As with the Sovereigns, Marvel is top-notch when it comes to the look of their many characters.  The inhabitants of the cold, icy, hedonistic Contraxia are all creatively done.

What I liked: As with the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," the writing is excellent.  One of my favorites:

Quill: "I finally found my family, don't you understand that?"

Gamora: "I thought you already had."

What I didn't like: I'm not a fan of Drax or, for that matter, Dave Bautista.

What I liked: There's a scene at the end with Groot that is awesome.  Again, if you've seen Marvel movies, you know to watch until the VERY END.  If you stop watching when they start the credits, you'll miss A LOT.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is excellent for ANYONE, whether they like superhero/villain movies or not due to the intelligent themes.  As with the first movie, this is more than just a superhero movie.

Rating?

I give "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" 5 stars.
Movie Review: "Doctor Strange" (2016)

Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen

Director: Kevin Feige

The superhero movie "Doctor Strange" is the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

The villain, Kaecilius, played by Mads Mikkelsen, makes his presence known right away. He and his posse are in search of something, and they succeed in getting it, causing destruction along the way. Moving apart from that, we now focus on Dr. Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who is so confident and so cocky he performs operations while listening to music. He's even more arrogant than Tony Stark (if that's even possible.)  As his love interest Dr. Christine Palmer, played by Rachel McAdams, said to him, "Everything is about you." But a significant life event sends Dr. Strange out of the hospital and into the tutelage of the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton. How does Dr. Strange go from wearing a lab coat to wearing the Cloak of Levitation?

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Everyone was great!  I was especially impressed with Benedict Cumberbatch, who had to do the entire movie in an American accent and never slipped up.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

What I liked:  There are some Marvel actors I have the hots for, and one of them is Cumberbatch!  Not only is he hot, but he's a terrific, award-winning actor.

What I liked: Rachel McAdams is a natural. I've loved her performances ever since I watched her in "Mean Girls."

What I didn't like:  Some of the fighting scenes include rolling objects, such as moving buildings.  It almost made me dizzy watching it.

What I liked: A black physical therapist in the movie tells Dr. Strange, "It will take me a while to pull the files from the archives, but if it proves your arrogant ass wrong - worth it."  It's one of the best lines in the movie.

What I liked: The Ancient One makes many important statements.  One of them is, "Death is what gives life meaning." I love that.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Dr. Strange" is a good movie for people who want more than just your typical superhero theme.  There are important concepts and life-changing lessons in this movie.

Rating?

I give "Dr. Strange "5 stars. (I'm glad I found a new Dr. Strange t-shirt (with its Marvel tag still on it) on the giveaway table at Escapade!)

Movie Review: "Captain America: Civil War" (2016)

Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, Elizabeth Olsen, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Tom Holland, Jeremy Renner, Emily VanCamp

Director: The Russo Brothers

The superhero movie "Captain America: Civil War" is the 13th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

It's 1991 and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan, under the influence of Hydra's brainwashing technique, commits a horrible crime to retrieve a super-soldier serum. Fast forward to the present day, in Lagos, Nigeria, and the Avengers are on a mission, except a horrible consequence results.  Are the Avengers heroes or are they "dangerous" as the Secretary of State implies? The government concludes the latter, and the United Nations attempts to gain control of the Avengers through the Sokovia Accords. Tony Stark/Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., is on board, as well as other Avengers. However, Steve Rogers/Captain America, played by Chris Evans, is not. As Peggy Carter, one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D., once said, "Compromise where you can. Where you can't, don't." Along the way, something horrible happens to the King of Wakanda. When his son T'Challa/Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, learns who did it, he vows revenge. Serious situations develop, including a "civil war" within the Avengers.  Can the civil war lead to peace?

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. are always exceptional actors.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

What I liked:  Scarlett Johansson/Natasha Romanoff possesses fighting skills that are always fun for me to watch.

What I liked: When Steve Rogers, with his strong, muscular arms, stops the helicopter Bucky is flying.

What I liked: There's a flashback scene to Tony Stark's teenage years.  Marvel does a great job of making Robert Downey Jr. look young.

What I liked: Captain American's approach to the theme of "Civil War." He's my favorite Marvel character.

What I liked: When Natasha says to Tony, "Are you incapable of letting go of your ego for one god-damn second?" (Tony has always been my least favorite Marvel character.)

What I liked: "Civil War" has an excellent story-line.  I truly enjoyed this movie.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Captain America: Civil War" is a perfect movie for people who not only love superhero movies but who also love a great story-line.  This is a movie you may want to watch twice!

Rating?

I give "Captain America: Civil War " 5 stars. It's one of my favorites!
Movie Review: "Ant-Man" (2015)

Cast: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Michael Peña, Tip "T.I." Harris, Anthony Mackie.

Director: Peyton Reed

The superhero movie "Ant Man" is the twelfth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 60 Second No Spoilers Intro

Dr. Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas, developed a shrinking technology, but in 1989 he resigned from S.H.I.E.L.D. because he felt his technology would fall into the wrong hands. "As long as I am alive, nobody will ever get that formula," says Dr. Pym. Fast forward, and Pym became the head of Pym Technologies. His understudy was Darren Cross, played by Corey Stoll. Cross was not happy with Pym for not sharing his secrets, so he forced him out of Pym Technologies with Hank's estranged daughter Hope, played by Evangeline Lily, being the deciding vote. Cross, after being obsessed with recreating Pym's shrinking formula, developed what he called the Yellowjacket shrinking technology, and when he invites Pym to the company to see it, Pym's fears are reignited.  Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd, has just come out of a three-year prison term for breaking and entering, and he has a young daughter who he hopes to see again.  He becomes Ant-Man, under the tutelage of Dr. Pym.  Can he stop Darren Cross and develop a relationship with his daughter?

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Everyone was good, especially Michael Peña.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

What I liked:  During the 1989 scene, Agent Peggy Carter is in it, and it was fun to see what she looked like.

What I liked: The Latin music during the Marvel opening graphics.

What I liked: Luis, Lang's friend, played by Michael Peña, was funny and fun to watch.

What I didn't like: There's a lot of little ants in this film. It's not that I dislike ants. They're organized and great workers, but seeing all those little ants all over made me itch.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Ant-Man" is a great way to learn about the origins of a character who will become one of the important members of the Avenger's team.

Rating?

I give "Ant Man" 4 stars. It's not one of my favorites, but it's a good movie.

Movie Review: "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr,  Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders.

Director: Joss Whedon

The superhero movie "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is the eleventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

The Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye open the movie in a winter fighting scene to retrieve Loki's scepter stolen by Hydra.  Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Dr. Banner (Hulk) have created what is known as Ultron (voiced marvelously by James Spader), incorporating the scepter, to be part of Stark's global defense program. But things don't go so well, and The Avengers are not too happy with Tony Stark.  However, cooler heads, like Captain America's, prevail, and a plan is established. In the movie, we are introduced to the character Wanda Maximoff, otherwise known as Scarlet Witch, and her twin. (Wanda has powerful, magical abilities.)

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Props go out to James Spader with this one. He's an excellent actor, and his creepy, snarky, sociopathic voice is perfect for Ultron.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Dislike:  As I said earlier, the movie opens with a winter fighting scene. I don't like it when scenes begin with wild fighting, but that's just me. I prefer movies that have scenes leading up to any fighting.

Dislike: Unlike some other Marvel movies, such as "Guardians of the Galaxy," the jokes in this one weren't funny. I'm not saying they were offensive. I'm saying they didn't make me laugh.

Dislike: There's a dynamic between Natasha Romanoff and Dr. Banner/Hulk that didn't do it for me. I'll be writing about this relationship in one of my upcoming fics.  But I'm not sure how I want to approach it.  Although I did like Natasha's line to Banner, "I adore you, but I need the other guy."

Like: New Avengers are recruited and ready for training.  I love that scene.

Like: The mid-credits scene with my favorite villain, Thanos. It's awesome.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" is good for people who like superhero/villain movies and who like James Spader's voice!

Rating?

This is my least favorite MCU movie so far. (But again, that's just me.)  I give it four stars.

Escapade 2020

Mar. 8th, 2020 04:48 pm
pole_dancer: Image of two penguins. (Escapade love penguins)
Another successful [personal profile] escapade_team is done. I had a wonderful time at Escapade 2020. Some significant changes for me:

1. Because I'm even more invested in MCU than I was before, I got more out of the MCU panels this year.
2. I have a definite plan for fic. Before, I had ideas, but nothing was ever certain. My exact fic plan is to write 10,000 to 20,000-word stories with a bisexual Black Widow as the main character and in coordination with the Marvel stories where she appears.
3. I always had an interest in Marvel movies, but now I'm also into some of the comic books. Thanks to the Escapade attendee (unfortunately, I don't remember her name) who turned me on to Comixology.
4. I managed to pay my admission fee for 2021 at Escapade rather than waiting until later in the year and at the last minute.
5. I got lucky again with the swap table and found a couple of awesome items, including a new Dr. Strange t-shirt with its Marvel tag still on it.
6. I got lucky again with the raffle and won an Orphan Black jacket. I've won something at every Escapade I've attended!

I am so looking forward to attending Escapade 2021. I always take the Southwest Chief train from Chicago to California and back with my best friend [personal profile] ride_4ever. It's so much better than taking the plane, and it's a great way to deal with con-drop after the conference is over. We have approximately three days and two nights on the train to think about things and plan for next year.

Movie Review: "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014)

Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper (the voice of Rocket), Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Benicio del Toro

Director: James Gunn

The superhero movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" is the tenth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

For anyone who hasn't seen the movie, I don't even want to state what happens in the beginning; it's just that powerful. So I'm approaching this intro differently. ~~ "Guardians of the Galaxy" is not so much a movie about misfits as it is a movie about a group of people who are dealing with incredible pain and unspeakable losses. The music we hear throughout this superhero movie (songs such as Redbone's "Come And Get Your Love") is music that Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) received from his mother and that he plays on a "Walkman" cassette.  The music, along with other reasons, as I'm sure those who have seen the movie and those who will see the film would agree, makes "Guardians of the Galaxy" a powerful, emotional movie that is more than just superheroes.  In fact, the superhero part, with its action scenes, its heroes and villains, and its focus on an orb, seems almost secondary in this Marvel film.

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

I want to give props to Zoe Saldana in this one. She is an underrated actress who plays the character of Gamora with a sultry coolness that's never forced.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Like:  As I said in my intro, the theme of unfortunate pasts is strong with this one, more so than just the typical superhero vs. villain theme. The way Marvel handles this theme is remarkable.  It makes "Guardians of the Galaxy" much more than just a superhero film.

Like: Korath, played by Djimon Hounsou, who is Beninese, is a villain, and I'm not too fond of villains.  However, I loved the way he looked.  Marvel took a dark-skinned man and gave him bright blue eyes. The contrast is beautiful. Bravo to Marvel for the diversity in this film.  It's not just that they include black characters. In "Guardians of the Galaxy," we have all sorts of creatures and races mixing.

Like: The music played throughout the film was spot-on for every scene.  Again, there's a reason for the type of music which you'll understand if you've seen the movie or will see the film.

Like: I wish I could visit the planet Xander.  It looks awesome!

Dislike: There's a prison scene that annoyed me because even though this is all fantasy, the guards in this movie leave a lot to be desired.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is excellent for ANYONE, whether they like superhero/villain movies or not due to what I think is the dominant theme.

Rating?

I have a five star scale for my movie reviews.  However, I give "Guardians of the Galaxy" SIX STARS. I'm still reviewing all of the MCU movies, and there are some I haven't seen.  But so far, next to "Black Panther," this is my favorite MCU film.

Final Words:

As always, stay until after the credits!

Movie Review: "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014)

Cast: Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan

Director: The Russo Brothers

The superhero movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is the ninth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

Steve Rogers, otherwise known as Captain America (Chris Evans), after waking up from his 70-year-sleep, is working for S.H.I.E.L.D. with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as its director.  He’s still trying to get his bearings, and he keeps a notebook of things people have recommended he check out, such as Nirvana and Marvin Gaye. He teams up with Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) to take care of a mission. But Rogers learns that Fury has another plan. "I can’t lead a mission when the people I’m leading have missions of their own," Rogers says to Fury. All Rogers has ever wanted to do was the right thing.  He is the quintessential "good guy." S.H.I.E.L.D. becomes compromised, and we meet the mysterious Winter Soldier (played by Sebastian Stan.) And what does Hydra play in all of this? Remember, we got introduced to Hydra (Nazi Deep Science division) in the first "Captain America."

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Scarlett Johansson has always been an excellent actress, but she’s especially good in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Along with her superb acting, you’ve got her fantastic power moves (I wish I could fight like her), and she’s incredibly sexy. Samuel L. Jackson is great in this too.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Like:  There's an action scene involving Nick Fury that's scary and very well done, but they also manage to include humor in the scene.

Like: There's an elevator scene that's spectacular.

Like: Steve Rogers/Captain America's body is, of course, too perfect in this.  I love it!

Like: It was so cool to see African-American Anthony Mackie in this movie.  I don’t know who has and hasn’t seen the movie.  So I don’t want to say much more about him.  However, one of the reasons I love MCU movies is because they are diverse.

Like: The dynamic between Natasha and Steve. If I ever decide actually to write fan fic, there's stuff I could write involving Natasha and Steve specifically from "Captain Marvel: The Winter Soldier."  It would be het, but there’s plenty of people who like het.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Captain Marvel: The Winter Soldier" is excellent for people who love superhero/villain movies and extreme action and fighting scenes.

Rating?

I give "Captain Marvel: The Winter Soldier" Five out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

As always, stay until after the credits!

Movie Review: "Thor: The Dark World" (2013)

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Kat Dennings, Anthony Hopkins, Christopher Eccleston, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, Idris Elba

Director: Alan Taylor

The superhero movie "Thor: The Dark World" is the eighth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

Long ago, Asgard ruler Bor defeats Malekith (played by Christopher Eccleston), the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, which prevented Malekith from releasing the Aether, a powerful weapon, on the Nine Realms. In defeating Malekith and his Dark Elves, the Aether was unable to be destroyed.  Instead, it was buried under a stone column. Fast-forward to present-day and Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston), who we last saw terrorizing Earth in "The Avengers," is now imprisoned for what he did on Earth.  He gets no love from his adoptive father Odin (played by Anthony Hopkins), who tells him in anger, "Your birthright was to die as a child!" Meanwhile, his adoptive brother Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) is set to be crowned king by his father Odin, the current ruler of Asgard. However, Thor misses Dr. Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman), who we met in "Thor," and the feeling from Jane is mutual. How do Dr. Foster and Thor meet up again? Is all well in Asgard, or will a series of horrible events tear it apart? Now that Loki is back at Asgard, what happens between him and Thor?

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Chris Hemsworth is an excellent actor and very natural. Natalie Portman, who won awards for her performance in "Black Swan," including an Academy Award, is also excellent as an actress. Christopher Eccleston does a great job as Malekith.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Like:  There is a fantastic scene in "Thor: The Dark World" involving a death. I thought the scene was beautiful and very well done.

Like: Malekith and his dark world are terrifying.  Marvel did a great job with Malekith's makeup, his costume, and the frightening black "spaceship" he and his warriors travel in.

Like: There are scary parts of the movie that, without me telling you why, made me think of when the Devil possesses Regan in "The Exorcist" and when planes attacked the Twin Towers on 9/11. If you've seen the movie, perhaps you'll know what I mean.

Like: Thor's mother Frigga (played by Rene Russo) is not in control like her ruler husband Odin, but she is a strong, wise woman who is not afraid of an enemy.

Like: This movie has got some hilarious lines in it.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Thor: The Dark World" is excellent not only for people who love superhero/villain movies but also for people who love depictions of Norse mythology.

Rating?

I give "Thor: The Dark World" Five out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

Movie Review: "Iron Man 3" (2013)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, Ben Kingsley, Ty Simpkins

Director: Shane Black

The superhero movie "Iron Man 3" is the seventh movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 60 Second No Spoilers Intro

"Iron Man 3," the third movie in the MCU "Iron Man" series, is not only an action movie, but it gives us a more in-depth look into the character Tony Stark. (Although it's not required that you watch all of the MCU movies before this one, I recommend that you do. At this point, beginning with "The Avengers," not knowing how they tie in together is a disadvantage, I believe. You can watch all of the movies in the MCU world at the Disney channel.) In "Iron Man 3," it begins in Switzerland in 1999, where a cocky Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) hooks up with scientist Maya Hansen (played by Rebecca Hall), the inventor of Extremis. Aldrich Killian (played by Guy Pearce), another scientist, wants to work with Hansen and Stark, but Stark doesn't want to work with him. After a one-night stand with Hansen, Stark is off being Stark. Now it's 2012, and Stark begins to suffer post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his "The Avengers" experience. His subsequent behavior affects his relationship with Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow.) That's coupled with a villain known as Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) who has bombed various places, including TCL Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. in California, and who terrorizes and injures two people close to Stark. Who is Mandarin, and how did Mandarin get so powerful? What happens to Mandarin in the end?

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

My favorite actress in this Iron Man movie is Gwyneth Paltrow. Although Robert Downey Jr. is a great actor, Gwyneth is a natural. It never feels forced with her. Ty Simpkins, who plays the role of Harley Keener, a boy who Stark meets, is also good.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Dislike: There's a scene where Stark finds himself out in the cold and just covers himself with a blanket he steals off of a statute. The entire time I was thinking how unrealistic the scene is. It's freezing in that scene.  Stark should have been a hell of a lot colder than he was.

Like: The famous comic book writer Stan Lee, who died in 2018, was still alive when "Iron Man 3" was made.  I love it when he appears in quick cameos.  R.I.P Stan Lee.

Like: There's a scene in the movie involving an airplane that is incredibly terrifying. I thought the scene was well-done.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Iron Man 3" is excellent for people who love superhero action movies and who want to get even deeper into the psyche of Tony Stark after watching previous Iron Man movies.

Rating?

I give "Iron Man 3" Five out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

As with all Marvel movies, make sure you stay until after the credits. This time the ending is a funny one.
Movie Review "The Avengers" (2012)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders

Director: Joss Whedon

The superhero movie "The Avengers" is the sixth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

In "The Avengers," we get to see many of our favorites from previous Marvel movies. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) the estranged brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), is on a mission. He wants to get his hands on a mysterious blazing blue square called "Tesseract," a powerful energy source, and give it to the leader of Chitauri. Why? Because the leader of the Chitauri promises him if he does that, he will be the leader of Earth. Well, we can't have that, now can we? Enter S.H.I.E.L.D. and director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson.) If you're familiar with Marvel movies, you know that one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s main jobs is to prevent attacks from extraterrestrials. Fury heads the "Avengers Initiative" and brings along "the first avenger" Captain America (Chris Evans) along with others, such as the gorgeous Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

One of the things I love about Marvel movies is the top-quality actors and actresses. Everyone is good in this film.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Like: Not every Marvel movie looks the same, but visually, "The Avengers" looks spectacular.

Dislike: Mark Ruffalo plays Bruce Banner/Hulk. Ruffalo is an excellent actor, but I was used to Ed Norton who played the role in "The Incredible Hulk." Mark Ruffalo said, "I'm a friend of Ed's, and yeah, that wasn't a great way for all that to go down. But the way I see it is that Ed has bequeathed this part to me. I look at it as my generation's Hamlet." So Marvel couldn't work it out with Norton, so they went with Ruffalo. That's fine. Things happen. But I'm just one of those people who likes things to stay the same.

Like: Chris Evans looks and demeanor in this movie are scrumptious. (Can you tell I have a thing for Chris Evans in this particular role?) I also like that Steve Rogers is traditional, responsible, and hardworking. He's not fond of the cocky Tony Stark. (Neither am I, at least initially.)

Like: This Marvel movie, in my opinion, is one of the more imaginative. The way they weave in all of the various superheroes is well done.

Like: The humor in this movie is well done.

Like: The spy Natasha Romanov/Black Widow has some incredible fighting moves in this movie. There's one particular scene, after she says, "let me put you on hold," that I love.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"The Avengers" is excellent for people who are familiar with the Marvel characters up to "The Avengers" and who want to catch up!

Rating?

I give "The Avengers" Five out of Five Stars.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011)

Cast: Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan

Director: Joe Johnston

The superhero movie "Captain America: The First Avenger" is the fifth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 60 Second No Spoilers Intro

It's 1942, and Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, wants to help America in the fight against the Nazis. However, the government continues to turn him down. He's too weak, too sickly, and too skinny to qualify. (Chris is no bigger than a bean pole at the beginning of this movie. The magic of cinema did a great job with this!)

Later, at the World Exhibition of future technologies, he meets Dr. Abraham Erskine. When Dr. Erskine asks Rogers if he wants to "kill Nazis," Rogers replies, "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from." Rogers is precisely what Erskine is looking for, so he offers the kid from Brooklyn the opportunity to join the Strategic Scientific Reserve devoted to producing a "super-soldier."

In a secret lab, Roger gets strapped inside a machine as "the first step to the path for peace." When the process is finished, out comes a hot, muscular guy that turns the female agent Peggy Carter on, as much as she tries to hide it. (A muscular Chris Evans turns me on too.)

Who is the villain?  Sure, you've got Hitler. But the focus is on Nazi officer Johann Schmidt. Schmidt is the leader of Hydra, the Nazi Deep Science division. As Schmidt says, "Hydra could go no further in Hitler's shadow." In other words, Schmidt desires to do way more than Hitler ever envisioned.

Meanwhile, Rogers goes from specimen to a "Captain America" performer promoting war bonds. Or, as Carter says, "lab rat" to "dancing monkey." It's embarrassing for Rogers, and he knows neither a lab rat or a dancing monkey can beat the Nazis or Schmidt. Encouraged by Carter, a silly Captain America becomes a serious Captain America.

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Agent Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell, is an excellent actress. Hugo Weaving is also great as the villain Johann Schmidt. So is Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Chester Phillips.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Dislike: As much as I enjoyed the acting of Hayley Atwell, her character was a bit too annoying for me. She can handle a gun, but her emotions are a little over-the-top at times.

Like: I loved how hot Chris Evans becomes.  As explained in this article, Captain America's Training Plan, he worked super hard to get into shape for the role.

Like: The graphics used in the closing credits were excellent. It was an attractive World War II theme.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Captain America: The First Avenger" is excellent for people who not only enjoy an action movie but a 1940s war-time feel.

Rating?

I give "Captain America: The First Avenger" Four out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

And as I've said in my previous reviews, be sure to watch for the post-credits scene. That's always typical for a Marvel movie to get you excited for the next one.

“Thor” (2011)

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Colm Feore, Idris Elba, Stellan Skarsgård, Kat Dennings

Director: Kenneth Branagh

The superhero movie “Thor” is the fourth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, is enormously handsome, enormously mighty, and enormously cocky.  He is also the son of Odin, the king of Asgard, played by Anthony Hopkins, and he assumes Odin will make him the next king and not his brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston.  In his quest to protect Asgard from what he perceives as a threat by the Frost Giants, Thor makes it his mission to confront a menacing looking Laufey, played by Colm Feore. Laufey lives in the cold and dark Jotunheim and is the king of the Frost Giants.  Thor is strong, handsome, confident, and arrogant, but is he smart? Along the way, on the planet Earth, we meet astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, a scientist who doesn’t discount the possibility of otherworldly existences.  When the human meets the Asgardian, changes happen, especially for Thor.  Idris Elba plays the all-seeing and all-hearing Heimdall, the guard of Asgard, and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, makes another appearance. (We first saw him in both “Iron Man” movies.) And as I’ve said in my previous reviews, be sure to watch for the post-credits scene.

Who Was Good and Who Wasn’t?

Kat Dennings plays Darcy Lewis, Dr. Jane Foster’s assistant, and unlike the acting of Stellan Skarsgård, who plays Foster’s fellow astrophysicist, Dennings' acting is a bit over-the-top.  But everyone else is excellent in this movie, especially Natalie Portman.

What I Liked and What I Didn’t Like

Like: Loki is overshadowed by his brother Thor and there are often consequences for a sibling who feels dominated by another.  I like the way the screenplay handles this dynamic.

Like: I love horror movies and monsters, and the dark, cold, eerie looking Jotunheim could be the set of a horror movie with the very scary looking Laufey as its monster complete with those evil red eyes.

Like: The look of Jotunheim and Asgard are well-done.  The costumes and the monsters of these mythic worlds are also well-done.

Like: The character development in this movie is the best I’ve seen of the Marvel movies I’ve reviewed so far.  Of the major characters, we leave the film truly understanding who they are.

Dislike: “Thor,” in my opinion, starts somewhat clunky.  It isn’t until we get to Thor’s encounter with Laufey that things begin to pick up.  That said, it’s still an excellent movie.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Thor" is excellent for people who love to look at good-looking, buff superheroes, despite their personality flaws.  It’s also good for lovers of depictions of Norse mythology.

Rating?

I give "Thor" Five out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

When a Marvel movie includes a post-credit scene, it’s a cliffhanger.  But “Thor” ends on a cliffhanger before its post-credit scene.  So be prepared to want more.

Well, I'm behind on my movie viewing.  Christmas is fast approaching, and today hubby and I did our annual Christ Crinkle Market shopping.  We always hit up Macy's too for their Frango Mints.  I'll be sure to get another Marvel movie review up next weekend.

So happy to be attending Escapade again!  Sent in my money for the 2019 con in February!
“The Incredible Hulk” (2008)

Cast: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt, Tim Blake Nelson

Director: Louis Leterrier

The superhero movie “The Incredible Hulk” is the second movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Note: In 2003, “Hulk,” based on the Marvel comic characters, was released. However, “The Incredible Hulk,” released in 2008, is the reboot and appears under MCU.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

Bruce Banner, played by Edward Norton, is the Hulk. But before any of that happened, he was just a noble scientist working for the common good and dating cellular biologist Betty Ross, played by Liv Tyler. One of Banner’s projects was gamma radiation resistance. So confident that he had successfully developed the resistance that he tests it on himself, but the test goes horribly wrong, and he turns into the Hulk destroying the lab and physically hurting and killing people in the process. In life, as well as in Marvel movies, the American government is seen by some as the enemy, and General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, played by William Hurt, is an example of why. He deliberately fails to tell Banner that the military aims to weaponize Banner’s findings to create “Super Soldiers.” Banner wants nothing to do with it and goes on the run. At the start of the movie, we find him in Brazil. Banner will always turn into the Hulk whenever his heart rate reaches 200 beats per minute. So he practices meditation and yoga to keep his heart rate under control while simultaneously searching for a cure, hopefully with the help of a fellow scientist, Mr. Blue, a person he has only communicated with online. (Mr. Blue calls Banner Mr. Green.) The action continues from there, including the appearance of Emil Blonsky, a self-serving, power-hungry soldier played by Tim Roth, and the arrival of the Hulk’s most powerful contender.

Who Was Good and Who Wasn’t?

Similar to Iron Man; the acting in “The Incredible Hulk” is outstanding. Edward Norton, Tim Roth, and William Hurt, for examples, have all been either nominated or are winners of major awards such as the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards. Liv Tyler, although not an A-List type, is a natural in this film. Nobody stuck out as a mediocre actor or actress in the film.

What I Liked and What I Didn’t Like

Dislike: In the opening credits we get “The Incredible Hulk” backstory, which is what happens to Banner in the lab before he goes on the run. I’d rather see this kind of information after the opening credits. Let’s just say I hope there weren’t people getting their popcorn while the opening credits were happening back in 2008. Not so much for the people who already knew the backstory, but for those who didn’t. The backstory is further explained later on in the movie, but this visual backstory isn’t something you want to miss.

Like: Blonsky says to General Ross, "This is a whole new level of weird.” That’s an excellent way to describe what has happened to Banner.

Dislike: They use a lot of weaponry in this movie, and that’s fine, but some of what they do is blast the Hulk with tranq ammo and live ammo in the form of bullets. These two forms of ammunition don’t seem to work on the Hulk. Duh! Why would they?

Dislike: Unlike Tony Stark slipping into a fantastical but at the same time believable Iron Man suit, when Banner transforms into the Hulk, it’s not as plausible. For one, he always busts out of the shirt he’s wearing, which makes sense, but he doesn’t break out of his pants. They just become tight-fitting but flooding and jagged-edged. Realistically, they should fall off him too when he turns into the Hulk, but then you wouldn’t have a PG-13 movie. Banner buys pants with an expandable waistband to compensate for what his pants will become, but it’s not believable.

Like: The love story between Bruce and Betty is sweet but also powerful. It helps that both of the characters are ethical and likable.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"The Incredible Hulk" is good for people who love action movies and powerful battles. It's also an excellent movie for people who enjoy love stories.

Rating?

I give "The Incredible Hulk" Four 1/2 out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

Look for a special cameo and be sure to watch the movie to the end.

I've got my DVD copy of "The Incredible Hulk," and I'm all set to review it for next Sunday/Monday.  In the meantime, have a great Thanksgiving!  I'm on a plane soon to Boston/Cambridge to be with my family.
As I had explained in my "sticky" post, when I attended escapadecon.net with my friend of over 20 years, the "Due South" expert[personal profile] ride_4ever, I knew I wanted to get involved in the world of fanfic as a writer, but I didn’t know in what way. However, during the "Black Panther" panel, fic author[personal profile] raine, at the end of the panel, mentioned that she would love to see a Black Widow/Nakia femslash. I thought, wait a minute! I can do that.

Now we’re talking Marvel, and in my life, with my time, I can focus on Marvel comics, OR I can focus on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, OR I can do both.  Well, I’m not doing both. So I choose to focus on the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU.

I like Marvel movies, but I haven’t seen most of them, and before I write a Black Widow/Nakia femslash, I HAVE to watch ALL of the Marvel movies. Why? Because that’s the way I am. I can’t help it. My personality won’t work any other way.

So . . . my watching all of the Marvel movies means that I’ll be posting reviews right here. AFTER I’ve reviewed ALL of the Marvel movies up until the ones that haven’t been released yet, I’ll write my first Black Widow/Nakia femslash. It’s going to take me the rest of the year and a large part of 2019 to review all of the Marvel movies that have been released.  But, there’s no rush here.  My goal is to stick to a weekly schedule. Which means that I’d like to post a movie review every Saturday, Sunday or Monday. It’s going to be fun.

When I attended Escapade 2018 as a newbie, I was a fish out of water. But for Escapade 2019, I’ll be there with a Marvel t-shirt on!

Also, I plan to own all of the Marvel movies on DVD. I don’t want to just watch them online. The first movie in the MCU is "Iron Man."  I own that one and the review follows. The next one is "The Incredible Hulk," and so on. I like my plan. It works well with my personality, my brain and my need to be organized in areas of my life.

The last time I posted here was in April 2018. I had a dance performance, pro-fic writing, ghostwriting and other demands on my time that caused me to take a long break from Dreamwidth.  Sometimes, that’s what’s needed in life. As I said before, there’s no rush. You do things in life when you’re ready to do them.  Now I’m ready to start posting Marvel movie reviews.

I'll simply be giving my impressions of the movies. No spoilers. I don’t like when other reviewers do it. So I won’t do it.

Also, I have to say that I love the Marvel Studio opening graphics that they display before each of their movies. It’s exciting, and it helps to further get you in the mood for what you’re about to see.  Another thing I want to say about Marvel movies is that you need to be sure to watch them to the end, and in some cases, as with "Iron Man," after the credits.  You'll get an insight into what the future holds.  MCU movies are standalones, but they are also connected.

“Iron Man” (2008)

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Shaun Toub

Director: Jon Favreau

The superhero movie “Iron Man” is the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

When we are introduced to Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., he leaves no doubt that he is a flashy, arrogant, celebrity billionaire. He is also the son of Howard Stark, a weapons developer, and he has inherited his father’s company, Stark Industries. At the start of the movie, we find him in Afghanistan promoting one of this weapons. There are a series of life-threatening events that put him in his Iron Man suit creation with the help of Yinsen an Afghan played by Shaun Toub. We watch Tony Stark evolve which includes making a decision about his company that angers Obadiah Stane, Stark Industries manager and villain played by Jeff Bridges.  However, Tony has a friend and ally in Lieutenant-colonel James Rhodes, played by Terrence Howard, and in his personal assistant and emerging love interest, despite his playboy past, Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow.

Who Was Good and Who Wasn't?

I can honestly say that the acting in this movie was superb by everyone, especially by Robert Downy Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow.  When the acting is good, it helps the quality of the film.  Downy Jr. has been nominated for an Academy Award and has won more than one Golden Globe. Paltrow has won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

What I Liked and What I Didn't Like

Dislike: Stark goes to bed with a blonde reporter, and Pepper Potts is blonde.  The blonde thing is unoriginal and boring.  You can show that a woman is attractive without her being blonde.  Going with a blonde to prove that someone is beautiful is actually lazy in my opinion. The blonde woman is the formula for “attractive,” but using a woman with a different hair color takes more work and imagination.

Like: Yensi says to Stark, “So you’re a man who has everything and nothing.”  Stark is a playboy billionaire with no wife and no family.  I like the statement because it reminds us that money isn't everything.

Like: Pepper Potts is smart.  She’s not portrayed as a blonde bimbo formula.

Like: The Iron Man suit is creative and striking. I love that it has everything a person needs to be a superhero, including a built-in phone. I love the bright colors.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Iron Man" is great for people who love action movies and superheroes.  It’s good for people who like realism and romance, but who can also get into fantasy.

Rating?

I give "Iron Man" Five out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

Be sure to watch the movie all the way through the ending credits.

R.I.P. Stan Lee (December 28, 1922 - November 12, 2018)

Yesterday, I was down; today I'm feeling better. As I said earlier, one of my focuses is on fic reading, especially femslash. The one I read this morning is Chasing After Gold Mines by geckoholic. (I'm not sure if geckoholic is on Dreamwidth or not. I found the name "geckoholic" but it may or may not be the author.) Anyway, I found the fic well-written and entertaining. I only wish it were longer. When I read something good, if it's short, I usually want it to be longer. :-)
Late last night, I looked in the mirror, and I didn't recognize myself. I'm middle-aged, but I'm not ready for the pasture yet. I've had my two and a half cups of black coffee, and now it's water for the rest of the day. (My usual.) Tonight, I'll exercise (including pole dance) for two hours. Hydrating and moving always helps.

This morning I read a good quote that helps too - "When you're feeling happy, your belief [in yourself] will be strong. If you're feeling tired, discouraged, under the weather, or lacking energy, that's when doubts come in. Everyone has those moments, so remind yourself that the way you're feeling is temporary, and it will pass."

My fic reading for today was a work-in-progress by[personal profile] raine. It's called Said Nobody. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
