My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro
Continuing from the 2014 "Guardians of the Galaxy," the half-human, half-Celestial Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) along with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), the raccoon-like Rocket (with the voice of Bradley Cooper), and Baby Groot are the Guardians of the Galaxy. Hired to protect valuable batteries for Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), the Sovereign people leader, the Guardian's payment is Nebula (Karen Gillan), Gamora's sister, caught trying to steal the batteries. From there, a series of exciting but unfortunate events have the Guardians fleeing from the Sovereigns. What does Quill learn about his childhood and his heritage; who is Ego; will Nebula ever soften her hatred for Gamora, and are the Sovereigns successful in their pursuit of the Guardians?
Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?
I was particularly impressed with the acting skills of Elizabeth Debicki. She's an absolute natural.
What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like
What I liked: As with the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," I love the 20th-century music on Quill's cassette. Songs like "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac and "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens are some of my favorites.
What I liked: Not only did I love the self-absorbed, pompous Ayesha, I loved the look of the gold Sovereigns.
What I liked: As with the Sovereigns, Marvel is top-notch when it comes to the look of their many characters. The inhabitants of the cold, icy, hedonistic Contraxia are all creatively done.
What I liked: As with the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," the writing is excellent. One of my favorites:
Quill: "I finally found my family, don't you understand that?"
Gamora: "I thought you already had."
What I didn't like: I'm not a fan of Drax or, for that matter, Dave Bautista.
What I liked: There's a scene at the end with Groot that is awesome. Again, if you've seen Marvel movies, you know to watch until the VERY END. If you stop watching when they start the credits, you'll miss A LOT.
Who Will Like This Movie?
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is excellent for ANYONE, whether they like superhero/villain movies or not due to the intelligent themes. As with the first movie, this is more than just a superhero movie.
Rating?
I give "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" 5 stars.
