Movie Review: "Thor: The Dark World" (2013)

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Kat Dennings, Anthony Hopkins, Christopher Eccleston, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, Idris Elba

Director: Alan Taylor

The superhero movie "Thor: The Dark World" is the eighth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

My 30 Second No Spoilers Intro

Long ago, Asgard ruler Bor defeats Malekith (played by Christopher Eccleston), the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, which prevented Malekith from releasing the Aether, a powerful weapon, on the Nine Realms. In defeating Malekith and his Dark Elves, the Aether was unable to be destroyed.  Instead, it was buried under a stone column. Fast-forward to present-day and Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston), who we last saw terrorizing Earth in "The Avengers," is now imprisoned for what he did on Earth.  He gets no love from his adoptive father Odin (played by Anthony Hopkins), who tells him in anger, "Your birthright was to die as a child!" Meanwhile, his adoptive brother Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) is set to be crowned king by his father Odin, the current ruler of Asgard. However, Thor misses Dr. Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman), who we met in "Thor," and the feeling from Jane is mutual. How do Dr. Foster and Thor meet up again? Is all well in Asgard, or will a series of horrible events tear it apart? Now that Loki is back at Asgard, what happens between him and Thor?

Who Was Good, and Who Wasn't?

Chris Hemsworth is an excellent actor and very natural. Natalie Portman, who won awards for her performance in "Black Swan," including an Academy Award, is also excellent as an actress. Christopher Eccleston does a great job as Malekith.

What I Liked, and What I Didn't Like

Like:  There is a fantastic scene in "Thor: The Dark World" involving a death. I thought the scene was beautiful and very well done.

Like: Malekith and his dark world are terrifying.  Marvel did a great job with Malekith's makeup, his costume, and the frightening black "spaceship" he and his warriors travel in.

Like: There are scary parts of the movie that, without me telling you why, made me think of when the Devil possesses Regan in "The Exorcist" and when planes attacked the Twin Towers on 9/11. If you've seen the movie, perhaps you'll know what I mean.

Like: Thor's mother Frigga (played by Rene Russo) is not in control like her ruler husband Odin, but she is a strong, wise woman who is not afraid of an enemy.

Like: This movie has got some hilarious lines in it.

Who Will Like This Movie?

"Thor: The Dark World" is excellent not only for people who love superhero/villain movies but also for people who love depictions of Norse mythology.

Rating?

I give "Thor: The Dark World" Five out of Five Stars.

Final Words:

As always, stay until after the credits!
